Marian

Name: Marian
Breed: Labrador x Wetterhoun x Golden Retriever Mix
Color: Black
Markings: Dark points around muzzle and paw tips, white marking on chest and below throat as well as a white tipped tail
Eyes: Reddish brown

Other:
None yet

Personality:
Determined | Dependable | Fair | Maternal | Stubborn | Paranoid | Outspoken | Uptight

Marian is determined to save those she can and to continue living in a world that wants her dead. Being determined is probably what has brought her this far in the first place. She is loyal to a fault and is extremely dependable if you've managed to earn her trust. She puts on a tough face for the most part and only reveals her vulnerabilities to those she cares about most. Marian is willing to do anything to keep the ones she cares about safe, whether that means giving up her food for the day or putting herself in harms way. She believes in fairness and has a strong moral compass that helps her in her decision-making. Marian has a deep maternal nature and can't help but want to care for and protect those who are young or in a vulnerable state. Although she has a strong moral compass and tries to be fair, she can be extremely stubborn and resolute in her decisions. While her stubborness has helped her put one paw in front of the other, it's often a stumbling block when building relationships with other dogs. Because of this, many dogs refer to her as uptight and demanding. Marian is outspoken and is willing to speak her mind if she finds it necessary. Additionally, she's paranoid of meeting new people, afraid that they will betray her and manipulate her in the end. It's hard for her to see the light at the end of the tunnel sometimes but she does her best to be optimistic about the future.

Quirks:
- Prone to humming when stressed or anxious
- Almost always knows which direction she is heading in
- Prefers to sleep outdoors even though it may be more dangerous
- Takes a trophy from each of her kills and buries it somewhere

History:

Marian was born to a very rambunctious country-bumpkin family of mutts. Her siblings were packed full of energy and her parents had a hard time keeping up with so many adventerous children. Sadie, the mother, was owned by an older man and his family who kept various breeds of hunting dogs. From a young age, the older man began training them to track and eventually how to hunt. She was typically considered the head of the 'pack' of pups and was called bossy more than once. Once they reached the age of 6 months, the man began selling them since he didn't have the money or time to maintain all of them. Marian had grown close to her siblings by then and was sad to see them go. A family of 3, a mother, father, and son came to buy a dog to use in their duck hunting. They weren't looking for anything fancy, it didn't have to be purebred. It just had to have a good nose, the ability to swim, and a loyal heart. While the majoirty of the pups fit this bill, the family's mother fell in love with Marian once she laid eyes on her. And with that, Marian was sold and said her goodbyes to the remaining pups and her mother.
Her new family was great, they gave her delicious food and a warm place to sleep. It wasn't very long until they began training Marian to track prey and to retrieve different objects from the water. It was hard work but Marian loved it. She loved the feeling of the cool water between her toes, the feathers of her prey that tickled her maw, and the praise she recieved after a solid day's work. The family had another dog as well, an old labrador, who's hunting days were over. He was living out the rest of his life inside their cozy cabin. At first, Mack, the old chocolate lab, didn't like her being there. He was a bit selfish and wanted the attention he used to get. Marian would try to play with him but he would always brush her off. It took about a month before Mack finally warmed up to her and would even talk with her. Marian was pleased to finally get in his good graces. Mack is probably the one that taught her to be so stubborn.
A couple years had passed and by then, you could fill a whole room with trophies of everything she had tracked and retrieved. Mack started going downhill in health and developed mast cell cancer. Unfortunately, it became aggressive very quickly and the family ended up having to put him to sleep. One day he was there, the next he was gone. At first, Marian was confused but then she realized what had happened. She became depressed and began losing weight, not eating as much as she should. Her family thought she was sick but in reality she was just grieving. She just couldn't wrap her head around it. Why would the world take such a great dog away from her? She eventually realized that he was an old dog and that it would've happened whether she wanted it to or not. Everyone has their time. She gradually moved back into a normal routine and returned to being a healthy weight. Although, she was sure she would never forget that experience or Mack.
A little over a year later on a warm summers morning while out with the father on a hunting trip, a mountain lion emerged from the brush and attacked the man before he could even get a shot off. It's behavior was erratic and insane and it frothed at the mouth. At a second glance, it's figure was distorted, it had an extra eye and lumps of fatty tissue all over it's body. Marian, pounced on the predator and fought with a ferocity she didn't know she had in an attempt to save her owner. At that point, it was too late. He was gone. She walked away with a gash on her shoulder and blood running down her legs. Marian limped back to the house to try and find somebody to help but there was no one there. When she arrived, the door hung ajar and everything inside was askew and scattered across the floor. There were a lot of items missing and barely any food was left behind. Marian grew fearful... her family had abandoned her. And what was wrong with that mountain lion? So after spending the night at her old home and tending to her wound the best she could, she decided that staying wasn't going to help her situation. All she knew is she needed to find someone. Anyone.
After weeks of searching, even with her keen sense of smell, Marian was unable to find her family. In fact, she hadn't seen any humans since the incident with the mountain lion. She had scavenged and managed to find a couple squirrels to snack on but finding food was growing more and more difficult. She used her tracking skills to keep her alive: the only thing she had left of her former family. A few more weeks of searching and Marian decided to give up the chase and focus on surviving. She realized that she would have to take care of herself now. No one was holding her paw anymore, she had to survive. It seemed everyday held a new challenge. Something always seemed to be lurking in the shadows, waiting for the moment she let her guard down. So she didn't, she was on high alert at all times. She avoided the wild animals that were distorted and found what food she could. Marian stayed light on her feet and had to make snap decision. Ultimately, she grew accustom to making strategies quickly and how to survive in this new world.  She had even seen a large black bear which looked sickly like the mountain lion, frothing at the moth, altered unnaturally in one way or another. She hid away quietly, downwind, until it finally left. Were all animals going to be like this? Was she going to end up like that?
She had met some other dogs along the way that had decieved her, stealing the food she had caught or taking her shelter for themselves. She grew paranoid of everyone she met, now trusting no one unless they earned it. She adapted. She found a way to live through this; this new world filled with disease and fear. There was one thing she was certain of throughout all of this, she wasn't going to let this new world break her.

So I got an invitation to join this group and I thought it looked really cool and since I'm an impulsive piece of trash I decided to make a new character. I had a lot of fun designing her and coming up with her personality and backstory. Y'know I don't usually like making female characters but I just don't think the idea I had for her fit to make her a male dog so here we are. It's funny that the one time I make a female character, the group suggests you start with a male haha
But anyways, I'm super excited to get started with her and I'm going to do my best to keep her and all my other characters as active as possible.
